What is a Title Tag?

A title tag is the main text that describes an online document. It is the single most important on-page SEO element (behind overall content) and appears in three key places:

Browser

Title Tags show up in both the top of a browsers chrome and in applicable tabs.

Search Result Pages

Title tags also show up in search engine results.

External Websites

Many times, external websites (especially social media sites) will use the title of a web page as its link anchor text.

SEO Best Practice

The title element of a web page is meant to be an accurate and concise description of a page's content. This element creates value in three specific areas (covered below) and is critical to both user experience and search engine optimization:

Relevancy

Creating a descriptive, keyword-laden title tag is important for increasing rankings in search engines. The screen shot below comes from SEOmoz's survey of 37 influential thought leaders in the SEO industry on the search engine ranking factors. In that survey, 35 of the 37 participants said that keyword usage in the title tag was the most important place to use keywords to achieve high rankings.

As title tags are such an important part of search engine optimization, implementing best practices for title tags makes for terrific low-energy, high-impact SEO tasks. The recommendations below cover the critical parts of optimizing title tags for search engine and usability goals:

Be Mindful of Length
70 characters is the maximum amount of characters that will display in the search results (the engines will show an ellipsis - "..." to indicate that a title tag has been cut off).
Place Important Keywords Close to the Front of the Title Tag
According to SEOmoz's testing and experience, the closer to the start of the title tag a keyword is, the more helpful it will be for ranking and the more likely a user will be to click them in search results (See below).

Leverage Branding
Many SEO firms recommend using the brand name at the end of a title tag instead, and there are times when this can be a better approach. The differentiating factor is the strength and awareness of the brand in the target market. If it is a well known brand, and it can make a difference in click-through rates in search results, the brand name should be first. If this is not the case, the keyword should be first.
Consider Readability and Emotional Impact
Creating a compelling title tag will pull in more visits from the search results. Thus, it's important to not only think about optimization and keyword usage, but the entire user experience. The title tag is a new visitor's first interaction with your brand when they find it in a search result and should convey the most positive impression possible.

Browser

The title tag of any page appears at the top of Internet browsing software. While this is important for user experience, this location has been noted to receive a relatively small amount of attention from users.

Search Engine Result Pages

Using keywords in title tags means that search engines will "bold" (or highlight) those terms in the search results when a user has performed a query with those terms. This helps garner a greater visibility and a higher click-through rate.

How can learn abot SEO?

One of my first few SEO consulting clients, starting in 2003, was a commercial lender in Seattle. I did very old school SEO for them (not knowing any better, and really learning the practice as I went along), jamming anchor text and links wherever I could. Unfortunately, this was right around the time of Google's "sandbox effect," which a Googler explained to me once as "an artifact of something else we created." For nearly 18 months, I fought against the sandbox, earning 1 rankings for nearly every term in MSN search and Yahoo! (which, at the time, had much more significant market share), but page 10+ on Google. Then, suddenly, one morning, we were 1 across the board in Google, along with a number of other sites that also "popped out." One odd element of the sandbox was that Google seemed to release sites en masse, similar to the Panda updates this year. We celebrated heavily, the company started getting customers and over the next few years.

PSD to HTML Conversion

PUTRAJAYA: The Public Service Department (PSD) will issue a show cause letter to the school principal in Johor if she had indeed uttered derogatory remarks at her students recently.

Its director-general Datuk Seri Abu Bakar Abdullah said the PSD will study the report submitted by the Education Ministry.

Abu Bakar said he received the six-inch thick report on Thursday and was still going through the papers.

“If there is a case against the principal, then the disciplinary committee will deliberate. A show cause letter will be issued to the principal and she will be given the opportunity to defend herself,” he said yesterday.

Abu Bakar said he was aware there was pressure from the public to resolve the matter quickly, adding that he would discuss with Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Sidek Hassan on how soon the disciplinary committee could meet. PSD to HTML
“But we also have to be mindful of the upcoming Hari Raya holidays.

“So far, we have only received a report against the teacher from Johor,” he said.

On Wednesday, Education Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin wanted the PSD, which had received a report on the incident, to decide on the case as soon as possible.

A Day in the life of a Software Developer

Software and Internet developers produce computer-based goods and services for individual consumers and companies. Software developers coordinate the production of software products, from choosing content providers, assembling graphics creators, and working with programmers, through the actual assembling, pressing and distribution of the final product. Internet producers go through much the same process, except instead of pressing a final product, they set up and maintain an Internet site that provides services to the user.

Developers spend most of the day on the telephone coordinating production with the members of the team. One developer wrote that she sees herself as a chef: “The parts I have to put together are the ingredients, and I have to decide how and when to put them together to make a beautiful dish.” As pleasant as this sounds, developers are not strangers to hard work. Late nights are not unusual; unforeseen problems are standard. “Build in an extra two weeks to any project,” said one five-year software developer, “then you’ll only be two weeks late.” Software developers should be organized but flexible, and have strong technical and interpersonal skills. A high tolerance for frustration is equally important. Software and Internet producers are self-starters by nature and tend to tackle problems head on. Those who can combine all these talents will find themselves well suited to the industry.

Developers told us the most exciting thing about the work is being able to produce a unique product that takes advantage of an unexploited medium. The final product each developer produces acts as a living resume, and many point with pride to the projects they are involved in. Also, because the software and Internet industries are so young, the field is wide open to those with talent. Requirements for Outsourcing

Outsourcing differs from other development because there is bound to be a contractual relationship, probably a geographic distance, a different sense of loyalty, language misunderstandings, cultural differences, reluctance to speak up to the client – and many other associated problems. Good requirements are always a problem, but outsourcing increases the problems, and makes even great demands on the requirements specification. The payoff for doing good requirements is greater, and the penalty for not doing them is more threatening.

I am going to argue that we need to make use of far more explicit background specification for each requirement, a page or more of specification for each requirement. I will argue that this is a necessary investment – because failure to do so will probably cost far more – sooner or later. I will argue that failure to be more detailed than normal will be counted in the clients disfavor in any legal proceedings trying to determine responsibility for failure of the project.

If anything can be misunderstood, it probably will be.

Every person has a strong tendency to interpret words slightly to largely differently from everybody else. When we ask 20-30 people to write down their interpretation of a short requirement statement, we always experience totally different, never identical answers from individuals working on the same project. We call this the ‘Ambiguity Test’ – and it really gets the point across to the whole group about how careful we must be when writing specifications that must be understood correctly.

Explicit Definition

One simple tactic we recommend in ‘Planguage’ or The Planning Language [CE] is to take the trouble to explicitly define any term that could possibly cause misunderstanding, and then ‘Capitalize’ the term to signal that the reader must interpret it with the official definition.
